01 / FKM REQUIREMENTS

Understanding FKM and Viton™

FKM is a generic classification for fluoroelastomer materials. Viton™ is a specific fluoroelastomer material brand; not all FKM is Viton™.

Viton™ identifies the fluoroelastomer material brand; it does not imply that the finished O-rings are manufactured or certified by the trademark owner.

The proposed material grade, available source documentation and supply conditions are reviewed for each project. Documentation is not automatically included with every order.

02 / FKM REQUIREMENTS

FKM Characteristics and Selection Limits

FKM O-rings are often considered where resistance to heat, oils, fuels and selected chemicals is important. Resistance to ozone and weathering can also be useful in industrial equipment.

These characteristics do not establish suitability for every application. Temperature, fluid exposure, pressure, motion and seal geometry must be assessed together. Cold flexibility, elastic recovery and resistance to wear can be important limitations in particular operating conditions.

Selecting FKM should therefore address the actual sealing requirement, rather than relying on the material name alone.

03 / FKM REQUIREMENTS

Temperature and Chemical Compatibility

Operating Temperature and Exposure

Review continuous temperature, short-term peaks and their duration, together with heating and cooling cycles.

Extended heat exposure can affect material properties and elastic recovery. At low temperatures, hardening and contraction can reduce the seal’s ability to follow movement or maintain contact, particularly during cold starts or low-pressure operation.

A published temperature range is a selection reference, not a guaranteed operating range for every finished O-ring. Performance in hot air does not necessarily represent performance in hot oil, steam or process chemicals.

Media, Additives and Cleaning Exposure

Identify the exact fluid, concentration, mixtures, additives and cleaning agents. Chemical exposure may cause swelling, shrinkage, hardening or changes in mechanical properties.

Conventional FKM compounds may be unsuitable for certain ketones, amines, low-molecular-weight esters and ethers. Hot water and steam also require careful assessment. Specialized formulations can behave differently, so these limitations should not be applied identically to every FKM compound.

Even when two O-rings are both described as FKM, the proposed compounded material may need confirmation for the specific media, temperature and sealing conditions. Matching colour or nominal hardness alone does not establish equivalence.

Compatibility guides provide a starting point. Where available evidence does not adequately represent the application, testing under representative conditions may be needed.

04 / FKM REQUIREMENTS

Seal Design and Operating Conditions

Compression and Elastic Recovery

An O-ring needs appropriate compression to establish initial sealing contact. Insufficient compression can leave an inadequate seal, while excessive compression can increase assembly force, friction and material stress.

Compression set describes incomplete recovery after compression under specified test conditions. It can reduce sealing margin when dimensions or operating conditions change, but a compression-set result is not a direct measurement of retained sealing force or service life.

Gland Geometry, Pressure and Extrusion

Review the O-ring cross-section, gland dimensions, tolerances and available groove space. Thermal expansion and fluid-induced volume changes can affect gland fill.

System pressure can help energize an O-ring, but it can also force material into clearance gaps. Extrusion risk depends on pressure, gap size, temperature and the material’s resistance to deformation. Back-up support may be needed for some designs.

Choosing a harder compound alone does not resolve every pressure or sealing problem.

Static and Dynamic Sealing

Static applications require suitable compression, surface condition and dimensional control. Pressure changes and temperature cycling still need consideration.

Dynamic applications additionally require assessment of motion, speed, contact surfaces, lubrication, friction, wear and generated heat. A material suitable for a static seal is not automatically suitable for reciprocating or rotating service.

05 / FKM REQUIREMENTS

Reviewing Common Sealing Problems

A damaged or leaking FKM O-ring should be reviewed together with its operating history.

Swelling or shrinkage

Check the process fluid, additives, cleaning exposure and temperature. Appearance alone does not establish chemical incompatibility as the sole cause.

Hardening or cracking

Review heat exposure, media, aging and mechanical stress before assigning a cause.

Flattening or incomplete recovery

Consider time under compression, temperature, material behaviour and gland design.

Extrusion, nibbling or wear

Check pressure peaks, clearances, motion, surfaces, lubrication and installation conditions.

An O-ring can also leak without visible damage. Dimensions, tolerances, compression and assembly condition remain important parts of the investigation.

Typical Industrial Applications

FKM O-rings may be evaluated for the following applications when the specific material and sealing design match the operating conditions.

Industrial Valves

Review the process fluid, temperature, pressure cycling and whether the O-ring seals a stationary joint or a moving component. Include cleaning and maintenance exposure.

Pumps

Consider the pumped fluid, pressure, temperature and installation location. Static housing seals and moving seals have different requirements; selecting FKM alone does not establish suitability for every pump sealing position.

Fuel and Oil Systems

Identify the fuel or oil specification, blends and additives. Changes in composition or operating temperature can change compatibility requirements.

Chemical Processing Equipment

Assess mixtures, concentration changes, cleaning fluids and intermittent exposure. A broad description such as “chemical service” is insufficient to confirm a suitable material.

Low-Temperature FKM: GLT O-Rings

FLUID supplies GLT O-rings manufactured using genuine Viton™ GLT-series fluoroelastomer materials. These specialized low-temperature options belong within the FKM family. The proposed compound, documentation requirements and application suitability are reviewed for each project.

10 / TECHNICAL REVIEW FAQ

FKM O-Ring FAQ

Is every FKM O-ring made from Viton™ material?

No. FKM is a generic material classification, while Viton™ is a specific material brand. If brand identity matters, specify it in the requirement and confirm the proposed material and available source documentation.

Can one FKM O-ring replace another with the same dimensions and hardness?

Not automatically. Check the material specification, media compatibility, temperature behaviour and sealing conditions. Matching dimensions and nominal hardness does not establish equivalent performance.

Is FKM suitable for all oils, fuels and chemicals?

No. Suitability depends on the specific compounded material and fluid, including blends, additives and cleaning agents. Temperature and exposure duration also matter. A general compatibility rating does not guarantee performance in the complete application.

When should I consider GLT O-rings?

Consider a low-temperature FKM review when cold starts, reduced elastic recovery or low-temperature leakage are concerns. GLT may be a candidate, but selection still requires media, temperature-cycle and seal-design assessment. TR-10 is a material test result, not a guaranteed minimum operating temperature for the finished seal.

Can changing to FKM solve leakage without changing the gland?

A suitable material change can help in some cases, but it cannot compensate for every design or installation problem. Check compression, gland fill, tolerances, extrusion gaps and surface condition. Dynamic seals also require review of friction, lubrication and wear.
