What Do You Need the Coating to Do?

Easier Assembly

A suitable coating may reduce installation friction, sticking or twisting. Describe the assembly difficulty and installation route so the coating and base O-ring can be considered together.

Specified Coating or Replacement

Share the existing part reference, base compound and coating specification. Matching colour or a generic “PTFE-coated” description does not establish product equivalence.

Colour Identification

Colour may help distinguish parts during handling or assembly. If identification must remain effective throughout service, specify that requirement: coating colour should not be assumed permanent under wear.

02 / PTFE-COATED O-RING REQUIREMENTS

Understand the Base O-Ring and Surface Coating

A PTFE-coated O-ring has an elastomeric body with a PTFE surface coating. It is different from a solid PTFE O-ring and from an elastomeric core enclosed in an FEP or PFA jacket.

The rubber compound provides the primary elastic sealing response. The coating modifies the surface; it does not turn the complete O-ring into a PTFE component.

Base compounds may include materials such as NBR, EPDM or FKM, depending on the coating system and application. Not every rubber formulation is compatible with every coating or treatment process. The specific combination and supply feasibility are confirmed for each project.

Where specified, coating thickness, coverage, adhesion and flexibility form part of the product requirements. Confirm whether drawing dimensions and tolerances apply before or after coating, together with the required inspection and acceptance criteria.

Installation, Start-up and Running Friction

PTFE’s generally low-friction characteristics help explain its use in surface treatments. They do not establish a universal friction coefficient or the performance of a particular coated O-ring.

Assembly Friction

Friction while fitting the O-ring into an assembly. A suitable coating may ease installation, but it does not replace correct gland design or careful handling.

Breakaway / Start-up Friction

The resistance to initiating motion from rest. Dwell time, compression, contact surfaces, lubrication and coating condition can affect the result.

Running Friction

Friction during continuing motion. Performance depends on the coating system and operating conditions, including load, speed, surfaces, lubrication and wear. Easier installation does not prove sustained friction reduction.

Coating Durability, Chemical Compatibility and Cleanliness

Coating durability depends on the particular system and its exposure to installation, rubbing, motion and the service environment. Wear or local coating loss can change friction and handling behaviour.

A surface coating should not be treated as a complete chemical-protection barrier. The base compound must suit the actual media, cleaning agents, lubricants and temperatures. Do not use a coating to justify an otherwise unsuitable elastomer.

Coating transfer or shedding may matter in cleanliness-sensitive applications. Specify particle limits, inspection requirements and replacement criteria where relevant. Zero shedding, permanent colour and a defined service life require product-specific evidence.

Review Installation and Operating Conditions Together

For static seals, confirm the base compound, gland geometry, compression, clearances and assembly method. Pressure capability cannot be established from the coating description alone.

Selected dynamic applications may be suitable, but require assessment of the actual coating, motion, speed, pressure, contact surfaces, lubrication and expected wear. Coated O-rings should not be accepted or rejected for dynamic service solely because they have a PTFE coating.

During installation, avoid damaging the surface through excessive stretching, sharp edges or rubbing against threads and shoulders. Confirm the installation method and any lubricant requirements for the specified product; a coating is not a general promise of lubricant-free assembly.

Review continuous temperature, short exposures and temperature cycling for both the elastomer and coating system. Bulk PTFE temperature or chemical-resistance data are not ratings for the complete seal.

08 / TECHNICAL REVIEW FAQ

PTFE-Coated O-Ring Selection Questions

Is a PTFE-coated O-ring the same as an encapsulated or solid PTFE O-ring?

No. A coated O-ring has a rubber body with a surface coating. An encapsulated O-ring has an FEP or PFA jacket around an elastomeric core, while a solid PTFE O-ring is a different material construction. They are not automatically interchangeable.

Can the coating make installation easier?

A suitable coating may reduce assembly friction, sticking or twisting. The result depends on the coating, base compound, contact surfaces and installation method. It does not replace correct gland design or careful handling.

Does PTFE coating provide permanently low friction?

Not as a general guarantee. Assembly or initial friction benefits do not establish long-term running performance. Coating condition can change through installation, motion, wear and exposure to the service environment.

Can PTFE-coated O-rings be used in dynamic seals?

Selected applications may be suitable. Confirm the coating system, motion, speed, pressure, surfaces, lubrication and wear requirements. The PTFE-coated label alone does not establish dynamic suitability.

Does coating improve temperature or chemical resistance?

Not automatically. The rubber compound and coating system must both suit the application. Do not apply bulk PTFE properties directly to the complete coated O-ring or rely on the coating to compensate for an incompatible base compound.

What sizes, colours and base materials can you supply?

Send the size designation or drawing, quantity, base compound and coating requirements. Availability is confirmed for the specific combination. Colour alone does not identify the elastomer, coating formulation or performance.

What should I specify for cleanliness-sensitive service?

Identify acceptable particles or residues, inspection requirements and any restrictions on coating transfer or shedding. These requirements need product-specific confirmation; a generic PTFE coating description does not establish cleanliness compliance.
